Introduction to Writing

 

 

I.          Types of Writing:

            A.        expository – to convey information

            B.         narrative – creative, telling a story

            C.        persuasive – influence someone’s choice

 

A.                 Expository writing

1.                  answer a question

2.                  deliver information

                                                                           i.      don’t use “I”

                                                                         ii.      no emotion

                                                                        iii.      use facts – no opinions

3.                  can be one paragraph or a five-paragraph essay

 

B.                 Narrative writing

1.                  tells a story

                                                                           i.      personal

                                                                         ii.      fictitious

                                                                        iii.      events are real or imaginary

2.                  generally at least half a page in length.

 

C.                 Persuasive writing

1.                  convince someone to do or think something

                                                                           i.      state your opinion

                                                                         ii.      support with facts (best argument first)

2.                  generally one paragraph
