Writing Assignment

October 23, 2006

Topic:              Who is the most important person in your life?  Why is he or she meaningful?  How does he or she affect the way you lead your life?  Write a three paragraph essay:  The first paragraph will introduce the person (or people) and state the characteristics of each that make them so important to you.  The second paragraph is the body paragraph which will give examples of the ways in which these characteristics influence your day-to-day life.  Finally, in the third paragraph, you summarize your reasons for choosing this person (or these people) and restate their importance in your life.

Plan/Outline:  Think about:  Who should you choose (parent, grandparent, historical figure, cultural icon)? What traits about that person are so important to you?  Does he/she have habits you would like to emulate (copy) as you grow up?  How does this person’s impact affect the way you live every day?

Draft:              Expand your outline into some semblance of a first draft. (one page)

Revise and Edit:  This means more than check your spelling.  You should read it aloud and make sure your ideas flow and they are written in logical order.  Editing includes moving sentences, restructuring sentences or paragraphs, and checking for spelling.  Do this BEFORE you hand it in on Thursday.

Draft:              Write your first draft (due Thursday). First drafts may be handwritten or typed.

Revise and Edit:  Yes, do it again, taking into consideration any comments from your teacher.

Write your final draft:  Make your writing as clear and interesting (with details!) as possible.  Final drafts must be typed in 12-font with standard margins.  Your final draft is due Monday.
