- The
aged Conte wanted the wooden wing because it would complete the magical
merry-go-round which was supposed to possess the property of making young
people age and elderly people become young instantly; the Conte must have
hoped to regain his youth by riding on it.
- The
children identified with Ida Spavento when they
learned that she had grown up in an orphanage.
- Ida Spavento agreed to give the children the lion’s wing
because it was useless to her except as a keepsake. In return for the wing, she wanted to
join them in the midnight meeting
with the Conte so that they could follow him and see the merry-go-round.
- Scipio
didn’t want to live under his father’s strict rule. Also, he feared his father’s punishment
if his thievery and second life were discovered.
- Victor
lied to the Hartliebs regarding the whereabouts
of their nephews because he had decided not to betray the children,
realizing that Bo would be miserable with the Hartliebs. He also did not want to separate the
brothers.
- Ida
was afraid to follow the Conte to the Isola Segreta because there were rumors that those who set
foot on the island were never seen again.
Also, as the group approached the island, they were shot at by the
Conte and saw enormous dogs.
- Prosper
assumed that it was Victor who betrayed the gang’s hiding place because
only he, aside from the children, knew about the Star-Palace.
- Dr.
Massimo, unaware of his son Scipio’s involvement with Hornet and the other
children, considered Hornet a naughty child who was probably a thief.
- Victor
discovered that the Conte paid the gang in counterfeit money.
- The Hartliebs managed to find Bo by posting pictures of
the child around the city. An
elderly woman identified him from the pictures, which led to his capture.
