  1. The condition that the Conte set for giving Scipio the job was a face to face meeting; this was a source of embarrassment for Scipio because he did not want to reveal his youth to an adult, thinking this might weaken his image.
  2. Victor had trouble recognizing Prosper and Bo because the two boys had disguised themselves—Prosper with spiky hair and Bo with his blonde hair dyed black.
  3. The Conte decided to do business with Scipio despite his youth because he respected cleverness more than age and felt the child could get him what he wanted.  He was impressed that Scipio had burgled some of the most important places in Venice.
  4. The Conte left a pigeon in the basket for Scipio because it was a carrier pigeon trained to return to its owner.
  5. Victor hesitated to grab Bo while Prosper and Scipio were in the church because he had enough sympathy to consider Prosper’s desperation, should his little brother disappear.

  9. It would now be easier for Victor to find the children because Bo had innocently told the detective about the home in the theater. 
  10. Victor’s visit to Dr. Massimo’s house revealed that Scipio was leading a double life:  not only was he the leader of a band of homeless children, but he was the son of a wealthy doctor, living in riches.
