  3. In what ways do you think that the children had an advantage over Victor?  How did Victor have an advantage over the children?
  4. How did the author make you feel sympathetic toward Victor?
  5. Why do you suppose Victor gave the gang a hint about Scipio’s real identity?
  6. Why do you think Prosper’s feelings toward Scipio softened?
  7. Why do you think Ida and Victor have become good friends?
  8. Do you think Barbarossa deserved his punishment?
