Answers to Ch. 9-10 questions

 

1)  Rob’s experience with Ira Long showed that he was a kind and thoughtful man, despite Aunt Matty’s gossip.  His presence seemed to make Mrs. Bascom much happier.

 

2) Rob was excited because he had never been away from home before.  He had never been exposed to anything as exciting as a county fair.

 

3) Rob thought Rutland was exciting because he had never been to a city before, even a small city like Rutland.  He was amazed at how busy and noisy it was; he experienced a sensory overload that he enjoyed very much.  

 

4) Rob worried that showing the yoke of oxen might be interpreted as showing pride, something that his family thought was sinful.

 

5) Robert paid for the soap to clean Pinky with the 10 cents Aunt Carrie gave him.

 

6) Rob was describing his dizziness prior to fainting in the pigs’ exhibition ring.

 

 

Answers to Ch. 11-12 questions

 

1)  Haven believed the dog would survive the battle and that afterwards she would be able to protect the Bascom’s chicken coop.

 

2) Robert and Haven learned that they had contributed to a brutal and unnatural conflict.  This should never have been allowed, even if it meant that all of their hens might ultimately succumb to weasels.

 

3) In Pinky could not have offspring, she would have to be slaughtered for profit.  The Peck’s could not afford to keep unproductive animals. 

 

4) Rob learned that life is sometimes unfair; greater rewards sometimes go to stronger (not better, or more worthy) creatures.

 

5) Rob wanted a coat that could be bought in a store even though the quality might be inferior to what his mother could make and his parents couldn’t afford it.  He also envied those who were able to purchase material things.
