Answers to packet questions, p. 17

Questions, p. 17:

  1. Miyax is able to survive the dark winter because she can hunt in the dark, she has fuel for light and fire, and she has Tornait and Kapu for company.

  1. With Amaroq dead and Kapu still healing, Miyax worries that the pack may not survive the winter on the small game the pack can hunt without a leader.

  1. Miyax builds an ice house, a more permanent shelter than a camp, because her experiences of living “with” the wolves, the friendship they provide, and Amaroq’s death at the hands of white hunters make her decide to live life as an Eskimo.

  1. Miyax enjoys her time with her visitors.  They are from Kangik, and describe it lovingly as an Eskimo village.  Miyax thinks she could live there traditionally but not alone.  When she learns that Kapugen is there, her decision is made.

  1. The Eskimo way of life had been corrupted in Kangik.  Alcoholism had become endemic and the Eskimos had forgotten their traditions.  Upon his arrival in Kangik, Kapugen had revived their interest in their culture and turned the production of traditional crafts into profitable business.

  1. Miyax had been very much looking forward to living traditionally with Kapugen.  She was disappointed to find that he had married a white woman and was working for white hunters.  She was horrified to think he have been responsible for Amaroq’s death.

  1. The traditional way of life for Eskimos, sadly, has come to an end.  Miyax will have to become somewhat Americanized and live life as Julie in the village of Kangik.
