Our Fifth Grade Curriculum

Math:
Text: Mathematics. Scott Foresman- Addison Wesley. Class meets
daily; we intend to cover these topics: multi-digit multiplication,
multi-digit division/long division, number sense, factors, graphing, decimals,
percents and fractions.
History:
Text: Social Studies: U.S. History, Early Years. Houghton-Mifflin, chapters 9-14; we will meet four times a week and cover from the Declaration of Independence to the Civil War, including the Louisiana Purchase/westward expansion, the Industrial Revolution/European immigration and southern society.English
(spelling, writing, grammar): Spelling packets will be handed out on Monday morning and will be due on Friday morning. All questions concerning spelling work must be asked by dismissal on Thursday. A spelling test will be given every Friday. Writing class will take place once a week; writing topics will include all types of writing: descriptive, persuasive, dialogue and creative. The weekly writing assignment will be given on Monday. Outlines will be due on Wednesday, rough drafts will be turned in on Thursday mornings, final drafts are due the following Monday.Reading: Book list for 2004-2005: Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George; ; A Day no Pigs would Die by Robert Newton Peck; The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke. We will have a fourth book whose topic will be the Civil War, to be decided later this year. The boys are expected to have a "free reading" book in their desks at all time (approximately 5 per year). In addition, they should have a "home reading" book by their bedsides, in which they should read 20 minutes nightly.
Science: Teacher: Mr. Farson; class meets three times a week. Please use the homework page to get more information.
French: Teacher: Mme Withstandley; Fifth grade is the first year of formal language instruction at Brunswick, though the boys have had several years of exposure to Spanish at this point. Our focus is first how to introduce oneself and the basic structures of the language. The Discovering French Bleu (Première Partie) text, workbook, and videos, will be used, but the boys will not have written homework until after the first midpoint.
