This month our homeroom studied
the following:
Social Studies: Westward movement; War of 1812; Age of Jackson;
Industrial Revolution. Current Events: Discussion.
Language Arts:
Reading: The Little Prince; Journal writing; simile and metaphor;
humorous fiction; symbolism review;
understatement.
Writing: Introduction to creative writing prompts; paragraph unity; verbs;
tense review; writing with verbs. Spelling: Life long words; difficult
pairs (pears) Vocabulary: Cognates (synonyms).
Study Skills: Note taking: abbreviating; summarizing; outlining;
reviewing for weekly tests (using science and history samples).
NEXT MONTH WE WILL STUDY:
Social Studies: Reformers; Compromises
(Missouri,etc.); Sectionalism
Reading: Little Prince; ongoing review and practice with satire,
symbolism, allegory, point of view; figurative language (idioms, puns,
personification).
Language Arts: More paragraph components; review for sentence variety;
practice with paragraph transitions; adjectives and adverbs
Study Skills: ERB review; Summarizing; paraphrasing; skimming and scanning;
research writing steps
Ask Your Child About: Research topic; understatement movie; knee hockey status;
