OBJECTIVES:

The purpose of this fast-paced course is to provide each student with the necessary environment in which to become a better speaker, reader and writer of Spanish.  Spanish II Honors will cover all units of the VISTAS program, in which students will be exposed to culture, grammar and vocabulary through the use of the video episodes and texts.  Students will be required to participate orally in class.  They will also develop more advanced writing techniques, through weekly practice.  Exposure to some Spanish literature will also be a part of the course and will include the reading of some short stories and poems.

EVALUATION:

Student progress will be evaluated in the following manner:  Students will be required to take between three and four tests per quarter, each covering 1or 2 units of the VISTAS program.  They will have at least one quiz grade per week in one of the following forms: grammar, vocabulary, oral/ listening proficiency, or composition.  Homework will form a certain percentage of the grade, and on occasion (when a composition) may be graded as a quiz.  Lastly, class participation will account for a portion of the final grade. Students will be required to speak in Spanish to the best of their ability.  The speaking of English in class, unless permitted by the teacher, will result in a lowered class participation grade.  Mid-year and final exams will be given in this course.

HOMEWORK:

Homework is to be completed before class, and will be either collected or checked at the start of class time.  All homework that is not completed by the time class begins will result in the receipt of a zero.  Make-up homework will only be accepted the day it was due, before the end of that day for half credit.  Late homework as a result of an excused absence will be given full credit if turned in within two days of your return to school.

MAKE-UPS OF ALL KINDS:

It is the student's responsibility to seek the teacher out to reschedule missed tests, quizzes, class assignments, etc.  Again, students will have two days from their return to school to make up any missed assignments.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT POLICY ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

Trust being the cornerstone of the Brunswick community, the Foreign Language Department would like to reiterate certain aspects and definitions of the school's policy on Academic Integrity.

"Dishonesty is the willful perversion of the truth with the intent to deceive."

It is assumed that all dealings between teachers and students will be direct and truthful.

"Cheating is the willful giving or receiving of any unfair advantage on any academic exercise."

All work, whether done in or out of the language classroom, must be completely original.  This includes all homework (graded or ungraded), projects, tests and quizzes.  Seeking the aid of translation software and on-line translation services will be considered cheating.  Make-up tests must be taken within two days of your return to school and without prior knowledge of specific examination material derived from communication with other students.

"Plagiarism is the submission of work as one's own any part of which is:  written or created by another; copied or paraphrased from ANY source without proper citation; based upon an idea unique to another source without proper acknowledgment."

This includes the assistance of native speakers, encyclopedias, on-line resources, etc., without previous permission from the teacher and proper citation.
