PRETERITO - SPELLING CHANGES VERBS FECHA:

Some verbs require a spelling change in the preterite. These verbs are not irregular. Spelling changes occur only to maintain pronunciation. There are four types of spelling changing verbs in the preterite:

I --> Y: An unaccented i between two vowels changes to y. Verbs: LEER, OIR, CREER. These verbs have a Y in the third person sing. (el, ella, usted form) and third person pl. (ellos, ellas, ustedes) forms:

	leer	oír	creer
yo	leí	oí	creí
tu	leíste	oíste	creíste
el/ella/usted	leyó	oyó	creyó
nosotros	leímos	oímos	creímos
vosotros	leísteis	oísteis	creísteis
ellos	leyeron	oyeron	creyeron

2. C --> QU: The letter c changes to qu before e or i. This rule affect the YO form of the preterite. Verbs: buscar, tocar, calificar, comunicar, criticar, chocar, dedicar, explicar, practicar, sacar.

yo	busqué	toqué
tu	buscaste	tocaste
el/ella/usted	buscó	tocó
nosotros	buscamos	tocamos
vosotros	buscasteis	tocasteis

3. G --> GU: The letter g changes to gu before e or i. This rule affect the YO form of the preterite. Verbs: pagar, jugar, entregar, llegar, obligar, pegar.

el/ella/usted	pagó	jugó
nosotros	pagamos	jugamos

4. Z --> C: The letter z changes to c before e or i. This rule affect the YO form of the preterite. Verbs: empezar, comenzar, almorzar, cruzar, especializar, utilizar.
