BASIC NOTES ON HAY (Textbook p. G34-35)

***Step 1:

• Remember that HAY doesn’t change: it means both THERE IS and THERE ARE:

There is a flying duck in the attic à Hay un pato volador en el ático

There are several flying ducks in the attic à Hay (unos/varios) patos voladores en el ático

***Step 2:

• The indefinite article does change, depending on the number and the gender of the noun that follows it (= agreement). The indefinite article has four forms:

• In a negative sentence, put NO before HAY:

Ex.: No hay cines en esta ciudad à There are no movie theaters in the city.

• The indefinite article is usually omitted when HAY is used in the negative.
• If answering a question in a negative form, repeat NO at the beginning of the sentence:

Ex.: ¿No hay cines en esta ciudad? à No, no hay cines en esta ciudad.

***Step 4:

• Remember that before a sing. masc. noun, UNO becomes UN (apócope): UNO > UN:

Ex. Ella tiene 1 libro = ella tiene UN libro.
