Gustar: Used to express likes, dislikes, things you like or love. They are used NOT with the regular subject pronouns but with the INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS:

 

Yo = me

Tú = te

Él/ella/usted = le

Nosotros = nos

Vosotros = os

Ellos/ellas/ustedes = les

 

Yo – me

When talking about one thing that you like: singular noun à gusta

 Me gusta el helado

Nos gusta el helado

 Te gusta el helado

When talking about more than one thing that you like: plural noun à gustan

Me gustan los helados

Nos gustan los helados

Te gustan los helados

The present tense of gustar with infinitives: The infinitive form of a verb tells what’s happening. But unlike a conjugated verb, it doesn’t tell you who performs the action or when the action takes place. In Spanish, infinitives may have one of three endings:

 

-ar     nadar                     -er     correr                           -ir       escribir

 

Like nouns, infinitives are used after gustar to say what people like to do:

Me gusta patinar – I like to skate

 

When gustar is follow by an infinitive you always used the singular form:

Gusta + infinitivo:

A Maria le gusta comer = Maria likes eating.

A mí me gusta ir al centro = I like to go downtown.

Gusta + singular noun:

A Maria le gusta el chocolate = Maria likes chocolate.

Pronouns after prepositions:

After prepositions like a (to), con (with), de (of, from, about) and en (in, on, at) the pronouns yo and change to and . All the other subject pronouns stay the same

To emphasize or clarify who likes something, add a + pronoun to a sentence with gustar: A mí me gusta patinar – I like to skate.

 

 

Con + the pronouns mí and tí make conmigo (with me) and contigo (with you). The rest of the subject pronouns remain the same:

Infinitives:

An infinitive tells the meaning of the verb without naming any subject or tense. In English the infinitives always have the word "to" in front of them. In Spanish, infinitives always end in   "-ar" like cantar,    "-er" like comer,     "-ir" like escribir.

Present tense of Querer – Stem change e àie

 

The verb querer = to want à belong to a group of verbs called stem-changing verbs (e à ie). In this group of verbs, the E in the stem becomes IE in all but the nosotros and vosotros forms in the present tense, “boot verb” remember???

You can use a noun or an infinitive after a form of querer to say what you or others want to do
