Middle School Overview

Whether you are a seasoned Middle Schooler, a 5th grader coming from our Lower School division, or simply a Middle School student new to Brunswick, this page will help you navigate the complexities of the sequence of courses in modern foreign languages.

Chinese, French, and Spanish are the three modern foreign languages taught in the Middle School. They are introduced in the 5th grade, and students must choose either one. They are expected to continue with the same language through the 8th grade. By the end of their Middle School career, students earn a "Level I" credit and can continue with the same language in the Upper School by taking a "Level II" course. Placement in the Upper School in a "regular" or "honors" course is based strictly on students' performance in Chinese, French, or Spanish in the Middle School, particularly in the 8th grade course.

For more information on the Modern Foreign Language Department and its offerings in the Middle School, please click on the appropriate buttons on either side of this page. If you are an 8th grader, you might click the "Upper School" button to see what you can expect when you will be there.

Good luck in all your endeavors!
