Eighth Grade/Français 108

Course Description

This is the final course in the middle school foundation of fundamental language skills.  It builds upon the gains students made in communication skills the previous year, and continues to develop their aural/oral and writing skills.  The material emphasizes the culture of the French-speaking world.  This course is communication-based and daily instruction is fully technologically integrated.  Writing, speaking, listening and reading are emphasized in equal measure. The pace and level of mastery expected in this course are commensurate with our overall preparation of the boys for the demands of the upper school.  The vocabulary reflects the cumulative nature of language instruction, review and deeper exploration of previous topics.  In grammar, new verbs and tenses will be introduced in addition to new uses of articles and verbal expressions.  Cultural content reinforces the thematic vocabulary, centering largely around food in the second half of the year.  Methodology includes repetition, video-directed speaking exercises, writing and performing skits in pairs or groups and writing activities.  We use the Discovering French Nouveau program, which includes a text, workbook, DVD program and a significant interactive website for oral, aural, and reading comprehension practice.  In the eighth grade, we cover units 1-4 (16 lessons) of the level two textbook. (Blanc).

We use the Discovering French Blanc text, workbook, and DVDs.  We will finish do the first 4 units of the program this year.
