Français 105

Course Description
This course marks the introduction to formal instruction in French. It is communication-based; therefore, writing, speaking, listening and reading are equally emphasized. Although mastery of the content covered in the course is a goal, virtually all of the vocabulary and grammar will be reviewed in subsequent years. The vocabulary revolves around daily life: greetings, the alphabet, numbers, nationalities, how one is doing, family and friends, age, food and drink, time, days, months and the weather. The grammar includes the singular forms of “être” and “avoir,” articles, using “ça va,” and using “il fait” with the weather. Cultural content reinforces the thematic vocabulary; it includes demographics of the Francophone world and the daily life of young Parisians: school, family, food, money, date, weather. Methodology includes repetition, video-directed speaking exercises, writing and performing skits in pairs or groups, writing activities, games and competitions. Instruction is fully technologically integrated. We use the Discovering French Nouveau program, which includes a text, workbook, DVD program and a significant interactive website for oral, aural, and reading comprehension practice. In the fifth grade, we cover the first two units (4 lessons) of the first level (Bleu – Première Partie).
We use the Discovering French Bleu Nouveau 1A text, workbook, and DVDs. We will cover the first two units of the text this year.
