LATIN II
HONORS
This is a rigorous second
year Latin course. Its goal is to complete the study of
basic Latin grammar by the later part of the second
semester and to begin to learn translation skills using
Caesar’s De Bello Gallico as the text. The Syllabus starts
with a rapid review of forms and syntax learned in Latin I.
The bulk of the year will be taken up with learning new
forms and constructions such as the subjunctive mood,
ablative absolute and indirect statement. The pace of the
course is quick, so that the student is expected to put in
the time and effort it will take to learn the material in a
rather short time. The pace is entirely and absolutely
determined by the Syllabus. The Syllabus knows no reverse
gear. The Syllabus operates on cruise control. In omnibus
Syllabus regit.
The Syllabus provides the class topic or exercise and the
homework for that night for each day the class meets. All
Tests and Major Quizzes are announced on the Syllabus. Thus
the student will know far in advance when there is a Test
or Major Quiz. There are also unannounced quizzes at the
Instructor’s discretion. There is an examination in January
and June. The Test, Major Quizzes and Quizzes are weighted
as follows: Test-5, Major Quiz-3, Quiz-1. Class
participation counts as 10% of the grade.
The main texts for this course are Learning to read Latin,
text and workbook. Both texts must be brought to class
every class meeting. Caesar will be used in the last
quarter of the year.
The student must read the Classics Department statement on
academic integrity. It is imperative that the student
understand the particulars of the statement, especially
those on cheating and plagiarism. The spirit and letter of
the statement will be absolutely enforced in this
classroom. It is also expected that the students will treat
each other with respect at all times.
The student is urged to see the Instructor for extra help
when needed.
