LATIN II

2008-2009

Overview

The objectives of Latin II are to solidify the students’ foundation in Latin, to complete the study of essential grammar, and to develop translation skills that help the students in the transition from reading increasingly difficult adapted passages to reading original Latin.  The course begins with a review of Latin dictionary skills and the forms and syntax studied last year.  Parts II and III of the Oxford Latin Course continue the story of the life of the poet Horace during the end of the republic and the beginning of the Age of Augustus.  The Latin readings, historically based with fiction added, expand the students’ understanding of the cultural and historical context of the literature of this period.  The new grammar introduced in the stories is reinforced in exercises from Latin to English as well as vice versa.  Latin vocabulary and English derivatives are emphasized.

Expectations and Policies

In order to achieve the goals of Latin II, students should follow these guidelines:

  • Check the syllabus daily and prepare diligently for every class. Homework should take approximately 40 minutes. It should be double-spaced on looseleaf paper with the following heading: name, Latin II, date, page number, lines to be translated, or exercises to be completed. Allow a few extra minutes every night to review some grammatical topic.
  • Be on time for class with texts, binder, completed homework, pen, and paper. Homework is due at the start of class.  An assignment that is turned in late will receive a reduced grade.
  • Keep an organized, neat, and complete binder with the following sections: (1) syllabus, (2) homework, (3) notes, and (4) quizzes and tests.
  • Listen attentively and participate thoughtfully in class. Be respectful of the teacher and classmates at all times. No food, drink, or gum in the classroom.
  • Be responsible to find out and complete all classwork and homework due to an absence.  All missed work must be turned in and all missed quizzes and tests must be taken within the same number of days as the student’s absence.  Notify me ahead of time in the case of an anticipated absence such as a game.
  • Adhere to the Classics Department’s policy on academic integrity (see separate web page).
  • Seek me out for extra help in the Classics Office or by e-mail (dgraf@brunswickschool.org).

Evaluation

Quarter grades are based on these factors:

  • preparation for class and notebook checks: 15%
  • quizzes, announced and unannounced (1-2 per week): 35%
  • tests (every 3 weeks): 50%
