AP Psych Summer Reading Essay Extravaganza, 2008

Background Over the past decade or so, much has been written about the particular needs and experiences of girls or boys as they grow up, which make them unique and distinct from the other gender.  Two classics in the field are the summer books assigned, Raising Cain and Reviving Ophelia.  It is ultimately imperative for psychology (and education) to unravel the extent and nature of these gender differences.  This is your job in the following assignment…

Assignment – Based on your reading of the relevant book above, discuss, in approximately 500 words

 a)     the nature and extent of gender differences -  how important are they? In what areas are they most significant?  Where do they come from, ( ie., hard-wired by genetics and/or based on different cultural experiences)?

 b)     the implications of these differences, for parenting, education ( ie, mixed or single sex), etc.

 c)     give a brief critique of the book – how much did it make you think?  How convincing were the author’s arguments?  To what extent did it change your thinking?  To what degree did the reading whet your appetite for the course?

 Hints and Particulars

1)      due Tuesday, 9/19, in hard copy, double spaced, by the end of classes (in order not to be late)

2)     no need to consult any additional sources (if you do, cite them) – I’m interested in what YOU think, not in your reworking of what someone else has thought

3)     if you quote or paraphrase original material from the book, cite it in APA (American Psychological Association) format – (Myers, p. 296).

 4)     Despite the fact that I am looking for your original thinking here, IT MUST ALSO BE ABUNDANTLY CLEAR FROM YOUR ESSAY THAT YOU READ (at least some of) THE BOOK.
