Writing Process

1.)      Prewriting:

  1. highlight key terms in essay question
  2. write response paragraphs that answer questions in essay to develop ideas
  3. use ideas in paragraphs to write clear thesis statement that joins supporting ideas and answers questions

 

2.)      Outline:

  1. write thesis statement in intro. paragrgaph
  2. find quotes to fit supporting ideas
  3. write page # and first few words of quote
  4. write short explanation of what quote means and how it fits into your thesis
  5. jot down concluding ideas (what does this novel teach you about human nature?)

 

3.)      Rough Draft:

  1. introduction:

1.        universal statement about topic

2.        title/author/point about character

3.        general reference to supporting ideas used

4.        THESIS STATEMENT

 

  1. supporting paragraphs:

1.        main point

2.        plot details to introduce quotation ( can be 2-3 sentences, alternate simple statement and beginning with a phrase or clause)

3.        quotation

-must fit your point

-          only use part of quotation that you will explain

-          block quote if more than 2 lines

-          FORMAT “....” (page #).

4.        explain what quotation means (use a “word” from passage)

5.        explain connection to THESIS

 

  1. conclusion:

1.        main point

2.        remind us of ideas proven in supporting paragraphs

3.        universal statement (when you finish book what have you learned about topic?)
