Intro:
grabbing sentence/universal statement?
title and author?
introduction to supporting points?
clear and interesting THESIS STATEMENT?
Supporting paragraphs:
topic sentence that makes point of supporting paragraph clear?
plot detail to introduce quote? (i.e.When P.S. realizes that the translation is in his desk,.......)
quotation from text, including page number (in parentheses) at the end?
explanation of meaning of quote?
explanation of HOW quote connects to your THESIS?
Conclusion:
reminder of THESIS? (do not restate)
reminder of main points? (try to combine sentences)
final thought about topic? (think about overall message here- what does this explain about the human experience/human nature?)
Style:
PROOFREAD ALOUD AT LEAST ONCE (KEEP A PEN WITH YOU WHILE YOU READ!)
are there sentences that can be combined?
are there groups of little words that could be replaced with one good vocab word?
do you repeat any ideas, words, phrases too often?
do you have any sentences that are too wordy? (so long that the idea gets lost)
do your sentences follow logically one to the next?
have you used proper transition words?
Mechanics:
characters’ names spelled correctly?
proper end punctuation?
comma rules?
run-on sentences?
sentence fragments?
quotations around passages from text?
Be brave and use some semi-colons!!
