Some of the
Great Novels
You should read before graduating
Overview
This course will introduce you to some of
the great novels I believe you ought to read before beginning your undergraduate
career. The works are loosely organized into thematic units through which we
will study the historical and cultural contexts of the literature by reading
critical essays as well as associated prose and poetry.
Your responsibilities will include not only reading
the primary works and writing the
traditional analytical essays both in and out of class, but also making oral
presentations and reading secondary sources in an effort to enrich your
experience. Finally, you will be asked to produce a more substantial paper than
normal (5-7 pages) in preparation for your Senior Essay due in May.
Please read the "Expectations" statement.
