John Keats (1795-1821)

 

- son of a manager of stables

- father dies when JK waas 8

- mother remarried, but dies of TB when JK was 14

- oldest of 2 brothers and a sister

- apprenticed to an apothacary-surgeon by his dishonest guardian

- 1816 licensed to practice

- well educated at Clake's

- Began a translation of the Aeneid in 1810

- Engaged to Fanny Brawne in 1819

- Died in Rome of TB in 1821

 

- Loved Scotland and England's Lake District for their rugged grandeur

 

1817 - 1st volume of poetry published

- Always regarded as one of the principle figures of the Romantic Movement.

- Tennyson considered him to be the greatest poet of 19C

- Matthew Arnold commended his intellectual & spiritual passion.
