Beowulf
Lines 301-606 (pgs. 21-41)
1. Shortly after arriving in Denmark, the Geats meet a Danish sea-watchman (229-300) and, later, Hrothgar’s officer (332-370). Based on these exchanges, describe the Danes’ initial impressions of the Geats. Cite specific examples.
2. In lines 399-425, Beowulf feels it is necessary to boast about some of his accomplishments to King Hrothgar. Why does he feel he must do this?
3. What does Beowulf say he must do while he is in Denmark?
4. After Beowulf is through boasting, Hrothgar injects a bit of realism. By citing specific lines, explain what Hrothgar says to Beowulf.
5. Later, Hrothgar calls for a banquet. Why is this banquet an important function in defining the relationship between Beowulf and Hrothgar; between the Geats and the Danes?
6. In lines 499-600, a conflict emerges between Beowulf and Unferth. Why does Unferth seem to be the only member of the Danish court who is not pleased by the arrival of Beowulf? How does Beowulf respond to Unferth’s accusations? Cite examples.
7. How does the conflict between Beowulf and Unferth reflect the importance of reputation in the Anglo-Saxon "heroic code"?
8. Evaluate the relationship between Hrothgar and Unferth. Do you perceive a weakness in the Danish court?
