Season Summary:
Despite the loss of
last year’s captain Kyle Moran, the Brunswick Golf Team was very
optimistic about its 2004 season after finishing 2nd at New
Englands last year. The Bruins wanted to win New Englands for the 1st
time ever. The weather resulted in several cancelled matches early in
the season but the team played well against some tough competition from
schools outside the FAA – Iona Prep, New Canaan High School, Rye High
School, and Loomis Chaffee. Perhaps, the biggest test early in the
season was the match against Kingswood-Oxford (New England Champs ’03).
This match was very exciting coming down to the last hole with Junior
Conor Malloy chipping in on the 18th hole at Round Hill to
win the match for Brunswick. The following week the golf team hosted the
Brunswick Invitational with Bergen Catholic (BC) - one of the top golf
teams in New Jersey, and the Bruins were able to win the tournament over
BC, Ardsley and Sysosset. Even Rye High School, one of the top teams in
the area suffered one of its few losses over the past 20 years to the
Bruins. The FAA Championship at Yale came next with Brunswick leading
the way over 6 other schools shooting a solid team score of 388 (only 5
shots off the record set in 1988) and beating the 2nd place
team (St. Luke’s) by 20 strokes. Brunswick won the tournament for the 6th
straight year. Unfornately, the Bruins suffered the only loss of the
season to Taft on their home course. Disappointed by their lackluster
performance, seniors Haertel, Jamgochian and Sherman were determined to
be ready for the New England Championship. With new team golf shirts,
the Bruins played their hearts out. Brunswick finished with an
impressive team score of 375 (75 average), three strokes better than
last year’s champions Kingswood-Oxford. They had accomplished their
goal and the 1st ever New England Championship for the
Brunswick Golf Team. What a season!
The team was led by
senior co-captains Larry Haertel ’04 (Brown) and John Jamgochian ’04
(Georgetown) and senior Peter Sherman ’04 (Bucknell). These players had
been a strong part of the golf teams strength over the last four years.
Haertel had a great season and won the FAA championship for the 3rd
time out of the last four years. Jamgochian had a strong season as well
shooting a 72 at the Brunswick Invitational at Round Hill and tieing
top-ranked Michael Quagliano (Ardsley) at the Brunswick Invitational.
Sherman continued to help out the team with scores in the 70’s at all of
the top tournaments ( 79 at FAA’s and 76 at New Englands). While the
three seniors were a major factor, Junior Conor Malloy had a significant
impact on the team’s performance. As next year’s captain, Conor had a
great season and finishing runner-up at New Englands. Another solid
player was sophomore JF Sorbella who scored several rounds in the 70’s
and finished with a 74 (41-33) at New Englands. Juniors Fernando Gentil
and John Watkins continued to help out the team showing the depth of
talent and filling in the top 7.
With the loss of
only one player, the Bruins were looking for help and added four new
players. Senior Jordan Sander (UPenn) contributed to several wins for
the team. In addition, sophomore Louis Aronne aided the team in several
matches and winning his match against Taft (the Bruins only win that
day). The two freshmen, Baity and Potter, also played well this year.
Baity earned All FAA at Yale shooting a 79, and Potter played well at
the Fishers Island tournament carding the low score for the Bruins of
83.
Brunswick had one
of its best seasons ever winning the FAA and New England Championships.
The loss of the top-three seniors will clearly have an impact on the
Brunswick Golf Team but the team has the potential to continue to
perform well with strong play from the rest of the team.
